Finding Residents Across Weirton
Start with the record that matches the question. An exact address can identify the county and parcel. A full name can be tested in the assessor, deed index, court search, obituary index, or public municipal files. A date can point toward a newspaper issue, vital index, or old directory. These records do not mean the same thing. An assessor names an owner or mailing recipient, a deed names parties to an instrument, and a voter result describes registration. None alone proves that a person lives at a place now.
The two-county split makes source order vital. A Weirton address may fall in Brooke County or Hancock County, while both county seats are outside the city. The state parcel viewer is the cleanest first branch. It can connect a street address to county, parcel number, assessment details, and a deed book and page. After that first check, use the office that keeps the needed record.
- Enter the full address in the state parcel viewer or the likely county assessor search.
- Confirm Brooke or Hancock County, then save the parcel number and deed book and page.
- Search a full name in the right official index, keeping dates and record roles separate.
- Ask the county clerk or court clerk when an online result lacks the actual document.
- For an older person, use local directories, newspapers, obituaries, tax books, and archives.
Weirton's Two-County Directory Split
Weirton is incorporated in both Brooke and Hancock Counties. ZIP 26062 does not settle that question because a ZIP code describes mail delivery, not a county line. The city is also not a county seat. Brooke County records route through Wellsburg, while Hancock County records route through New Cumberland. This is the key local quirk in any residents directory search.
Use the West Virginia Property Viewer to search by county, owner, street address, parcel number, map components, geometry, or coordinates. It can show a physical E-911 address, owner, assessment detail, flood information, and deed book and page. Parcel lines are display aids rather than legal boundaries. A deed, plat, or survey is needed when an exact boundary matters.
The official viewer below shows the map interface used to make that first county and parcel decision.

That choice prevents a Hancock search from being treated as complete when the parcel is on the Brooke side of Weirton.
Note: A postal address, city boundary, ward, parcel, and county are related facts, but they are not interchangeable.
Offices Behind Weirton Resident Records
Three types of custodians anchor current Weirton research. County assessors identify parcels and assessment owners. County clerks keep deeds and many other recorded instruments. Election officials maintain registration records, while the state lookup lets each voter check a current registration. The City Clerk holds permanent municipal records, council proceedings, city code, board files, and municipal-election material, but the city office is not a substitute for county land or court records.

Weirton Property Directory Fields
The Brooke and Hancock assessor portals use the same basic search model. An address search can lead to the taxing district, physical address, owner, mailing address, legal description, parcel components, assessment, and a deed reference. The assessor is a discovery source, not the final deed. Its mailing address may differ from the physical site, and an assessment owner may be a company, estate, trust, or public body.
| Search field | Entry or format | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Owner name | Last name first, no commas | Assessment accounts by named owner |
| Parcel address | Street number and name | Property record for a known place |
| Account number | County identifier | A specific assessment account |
| District, map, parcel | Separate components | A known tax-map location |
| Legal description | Tract wording | Parcels tied to a named tract |
| Deed book and page | Instrument reference | Bridge from assessor to clerk |
The Brooke County Assessor form is an online starting point for the Brooke side.

The field set shows why a name, address, or deed reference can each lead into the same parcel record.
Current Weirton Resident Directory Sources
A current residents directory is assembled from focused public systems, not one government master list. Each source identifies a role. A no-result may mean the person does not own land, has no matching public case, uses another county, or is not part of that record set. It is not proof that a person is absent from Weirton.
| Public source | Role recorded | Keeper | Access |
|---|---|---|---|
| Property roll | Owner or mailing recipient | County assessor | County portal or state viewer |
| Land index | Grantor, grantee, lien, or estate party | County clerk | Index, clerk request, or archives |
| Voter lookup | Current registered voter and districts | SOS and county clerk | Private name and birth-date query |
| Magistrate index | Party in a public magistrate case | WV Judiciary | Free index; clerk for documents |
| Municipal archive | Official, appointee, or named participant | Weirton City Clerk | Archive, agenda, or request |
| Obituary index | Subject in a dated newspaper | Mary H. Weir Library | Index and microfilm request |
Use two independent records when identity matters. Keep the date, county, exact spelling, and role from each result. Owner, voter, grantor, court party, and obituary subject should remain distinct labels.
Weirton Deed Index Connections
Hancock County's compiled land-record interface can be searched by date range, category, party role, description, book, and party name. Categories found in the research include deeds, liens, estates, UCC filings, marriage, birth, death, and miscellaneous records. For land research, search the same party as both grantor and grantee. Record the book and page, then ask the clerk for the underlying public instrument when the index does not answer the question.
The Brooke side has a different fallback chain. A current public Brooke deed-index portal was not located. Start with the assessor's deed book and page, contact the record custodian, and use the West Virginia Archives finding aid for older books. The Archives lists Brooke deed indexes from 1797 through 1948 and deeds from 1797 through 1901. Hancock archival indexes span 1848 through 1928, with deed books through 1902. These are archival holdings, not full online coverage.
Note: An index points to a record; only the instrument or clerk-issued copy supplies the full recorded text.
Weirton Voter Lookup Limits
The West Virginia voter lookup requires first name, last name, and date of birth. A result can return status, party, political districts, and polling place. The system is informational and updates nightly, so a change made today may appear the next day. The county clerk is the correction and confirmation route.
State law permits inspection of active, inactive, rejected, and canceled voter records during office hours through lists or a read-only terminal. Public data exclude phone numbers, email addresses, Social Security numbers, driver's-license numbers, and nonoperator ID numbers. The law restricts solicitation, advertising, resale, and similar uses. Use a birth date only for the private query. Do not save or publish it.
The captured state form shows the narrow search field set.

That screen helps distinguish a status check from a public street roster.
Verify Weirton Court Directory Matches
West Virginia's Magistrate Court Case Search accepts a first name, last name, or case number. It is free and needs no registration, but results are capped at 30 and documents are not online. A result may show a name and birth date, filed date, charge, disposition, and document list. It remains a lead until checked with the proper Brooke or Hancock magistrate clerk.
Municipal, magistrate, circuit, family, and federal cases take different routes. Weirton Municipal Court handles matters processed by Weirton Police. County files go to the correct county clerk. Federal cases route through the Northern District of West Virginia. Compare county, middle initial, filing date, case number, and any lawful date of birth shown. Label an uncertain hit as a possible match.
- Docket
- The court's dated list of filings and case events.
- Index
- A finding tool that points to a file but may not contain documents.
- Disposition
- The recorded outcome or status of a charge or case.
- Certified copy
- A copy authenticated by the office that holds the record.
Weirton Vital Record Routes
West Virginia Vital Registration issues certified birth, death, marriage, divorce, fetal-death, and stillbirth records. State copies cost $12 per certificate, including a nonrefundable search fee. Requests can be made by mail, in person in Charleston, or through the online vendor linked by the state. Mail requests need the application, acceptable identification, payment, and a return address. County clerks may use different local fees and steps.
Birth records become public after 100 years. Death, fetal-death, marriage, divorce, and annulment records become public after 50 years. Earlier certificates are limited to authorized people and processes. Historical researchers can use WV Archives Vital Research Records, but those are research copies. Certified documents still come from the issuing county or state.
The Hancock Clerk notes that many birth and death certificates after July 1978 are in Brooke County because the hospital moved. Treat that as a search clue, not a rule for every Weirton event.
Weirton Directory Roles Stay Distinct
A sound Weirton residents directory search preserves what each record says. A parcel can show an owner, E-911 address, mailing address, legal description, and deed reference at once. Those fields can point to different people or entities. The inspected Half Moon parcel carries a corporate owner and a Weirton mailing address. It cannot become a household listing.
The same care applies elsewhere. A registered agent address is a business role. A court index names a case party. A city board file documents a public role. An obituary records a death and family context. A printed directory reflects its issue year. These sources are useful because their labels and dates are precise.
The official sample parcel displays those separate fields.

The sample warns that a place name, owner, mailing address, and occupant are not four names for the same fact.
Historical Weirton Resident Directory Paths
Older names may be filed under Hollidays Cove, Weirton Heights, Marland Heights, or Weirton. The modern city was incorporated in 1947 after communities merged, while county records began much earlier. Brooke County's deed and tax trail starts with its 1797 formation. Hancock County records begin with the county's 1848 formation. Keep the place name used by the source rather than silently replacing it.
Local genealogy holdings list Weirton city directories for 1971, 1972, 1977 through 1988/89, 1990 through 1992, and 1994 through 1999. Gaps remain, and no publisher, public scan, or sample entry was confirmed. The full shelf belongs on the Weirton City Directory page. For a short trail, pair a directory year with deeds, tax books, census material, and dated news.
- Resident roll
- A focused list of a defined role, such as voter, owner, or directory-listed person.
- Parcel
- A unit of land identified by county tax-map parts.
- Criss-cross directory
- A directory arranged by address or phone instead of surname.
- Index
- A search aid pointing to a book, image, file, or certificate.
Weirton Newspapers Find Past Residents
Mary H. Weir Public Library combines local newspapers, census material, regional history, reference help, and an evolving obituary index. Search by surname, first name, city, or date. Once a date is found, staff can retrieve the issue from microfilm and provide a digital copy by email. The index has no stated full start and end dates, so a no-result is not conclusive.
The Library of Congress catalogs the Weirton Daily Times from 1928 to the present under LCCN sn85059675. The catalog sets the title history, while the local library is the practical route to an article. News can connect a person with relatives, clubs, school events, civic meetings, and an address on a precise date. Cite it as a dated report, not a current resident record.
Note: Search each older community name as well as Weirton when a family or address predates the 1947 incorporation.
The Weirton Area Museum holds Weirton Steel bulletins, photos, paintings, and films that add industrial and community context. The Hancock County Historical Society keeps family vertical files plus files on buildings, businesses, and events. Brooke County genealogy material is available by appointment through the Brooke County Historical Museum. These are not current household rolls, but they can solve old name, place, and group questions missing from state portals.
Mary H. Weir Library has its own record-survival story. It opened in 1926 with fewer than 1,000 books and 111 visitors that day. A new building was dedicated in 1958, microfilm service arrived in the 1960s, and the library became a Brooke and Hancock service center in 1967. That cross-county role fits Weirton's geography and helps link print sources to both county histories.
Weirton Municipal Records by Date
Weirton publishes two useful search layers. The agenda center sorts council, library board, planning, sanitary, traffic, utility, water, transit, and zoning records by category and year. The archive center searches financial statements, budgets, water reports, annual statements, and other files by category, keyword, time period, or date range.
A dated notice can prove a narrow fact without becoming a resident list. A 2025 Water Board vacancy notice stated customer and state-residency qualifications for applicants. A spring cleanup notice defined eligible city sanitation customers and service dates. Use the exact notice date and wording. Do not turn an eligibility rule into proof that a named person lived at an address.
The Weirton Agenda Center shows its live controls.

The categories help direct a request to one public body instead of asking for every file tied to a name.
Official Rolls Versus Search Companies
Official records and commercial search products answer different questions. Government sources identify a custodian, record role, and correction route. A commercial profile may merge data from many dates and sources without showing why entries were joined. Start with the official source when a county, document, date, or legal record matters, then verify the public file.
| Point | Official Weirton route | Commercial category |
|---|---|---|
| Meaning | Names owner, voter, deed party, or court party | May combine roles |
| Date | Set by custodian and record type | May hide source date |
| Document | Clerk, library, archive, or certificate process | Often a summary |
| Correction | Contact the responsible agency | Uses its own process |
Free does not mean complete. Some indexes are free, while certified copies, archive research, and reproduction can have fees. Confirm whether an order is for an index result, plain copy, research copy, or certified copy.
Request Missing Weirton Resident Records
West Virginia's Freedom of Information Act permits inspection or copying of public records unless an exemption applies. Send a request to the office that holds the file. Name the record type, date range, department, and preferred electronic format. A narrow request for a board appointment or permit is easier to process than a demand for every record about one person.
Under W.Va. Code §29B-1-3, the custodian responds as soon as practicable and no later than five days, excluding weekends and legal holidays. The office may provide the record, give a time and place for inspection, or deny in writing with a legal basis. This is a response deadline, not a promise that a large request is finished in five days. Charges are limited to actual reproduction cost.
When no online index exists, use the office counter or phone, a written request, the local library or museum, then WV Archives for old county books. Archives staff do not accept phone or email research requests, and mailed research has fee rules.
Lawful Use of Weirton Directories
Open records still have limits. Voter files omit protected identifiers and restrict solicitation, advertising, and resale. Courts may seal juvenile, expunged, or protected material. Vital certificates remain confidential until their release age unless the requester is authorized. The West Virginia Address Confidentiality Program gives eligible survivors a substitute post-office-box address and mail forwarding. Public research must never try to bypass that protection.
Accuracy is also a safety issue. Same-name cases, absentee owners, corporate parcels, estate names, old place labels, and print errors can create false matches. Preserve the spelling, source date, county, record role, and book, page, case, or certificate reference. When facts do not line up, stop at “possible match” and ask the custodian to verify the record.
